Home/Tools/PQR range from a test coupon

PQR range of qualification per ASME IX.

Enter the PQR (procedure qualification record) you will weld and test — per ASME BPVC Section IX the program shows what a WPS referencing it may use: thicknesses, filler metals, positions, preheat, PWHT, heat input — including supplementary essential variables when toughness is required. Free, no sign-in.

The same PQR editor as in the register (Form QW-483, 8 steps) — without attachments and signatures. Values in the unit system of the record: SI or U.S. Customary, inch fractions included.

What the tool derives

You enter the PQR as recorded on Form QW-483: processes, base metal with P-No. and Group No. (Table QW/QB-422), coupon thickness, filler metals with F-No. and A-No., position, preheat, PWHT, gases, electrical values per pass and the tests. The program derives per ASME BPVC Section IX (variable tables QW-252 … QW-267 and Table QW-451) what a WPS referencing this PQR may use: base metal and deposit thicknesses, F-No. and A-No., P-No. pairs, preheat, PWHT, heat input — every line with its clause and justification.

An ASME PQR carries no ranges by itself (QW-200.2): the range is a derivation. Supplementary essential variables (S) apply only when the referencing code requires toughness; nonessential variables (N) may be changed on the WPS without requalification. The evaluation runs in the unit system of the record (SI or U.S. Customary) with limits from the same column of the table.

Frequently asked questions

Why does an ASME PQR have no “range” like an EN ISO 15614-1 WPQR?

A PQR records the actual values used to weld the coupon and the test results (QW-200.2). The ranges live on the WPS that references the PQR; they follow from the variable tables QW-252 … QW-267 and Table QW-451. This tool derives them from the PQR, as the engineer must when writing the WPS.

What is a supplementary essential variable?

A variable that becomes essential only when the referencing code requires toughness testing (QW-401.1): for example Group No., heat input, interpass temperature and the minimum thickness per QW-403.6. The tool tags them “S” and states that they apply only when toughness is required.

Does the tool work in inches and in millimetres?

Yes. A record has one unit system (SI or U.S. Customary) and values are entered in it, inch fractions included (3/4 in.). Switching the system converts values only after confirmation, using the paired values from the Code tables or three significant figures (Appendix G). Nothing converts silently.
