Welder check.
Test piece
Step 1: enter the test piece (what the welder welded in the test) — on the right you get the ISO designation and the range table. Step 2: on the tab, check whether this qualification (or your welders) covers a specific production weld.
Designation and range

| Pipe diameter | — | pipe D ≥ 500 (fixed) · D ≥ 75 (rotating, PA/PB/PC/PD) | §5.3 b/c |
| Welding position | PE | PA, PC, PE | §5.8 / Tab.9,10 |

The parent material is a non-essential variable — it is recorded on the certificate but does not limit the range: per the standard the welder is qualified for groups 1–11 (all steels). The only exception is 142/311 without filler material (limited to the main group of the test piece — a note in the standard). What really limits is the filler material group (FM, Tab. 3) and its type (Tab. 4/5): FM1, for example, covers only FM1 and FM2, so stainless steel cannot in practice be welded (it requires FM5).
Frequently asked questions
What determines a welder’s range of qualification?
Under EN ISO 9606-1 the range is set by the welding process, product type (plate or pipe), weld type (butt or fillet), filler material group, test-piece thickness or diameter, welding position and technique (single-sided with or without backing, double-sided). The tool derives the range table from the test piece to the standard.
How long is a welder’s certificate valid?
The qualification is confirmed by a signature every 6 months (EN ISO 9606-1 §9.2). Prolongation follows §9.3: a retest every 3 years, or 2 years based on production quality records, or without time limit when the quality-system conditions are met. The tool shows the confirmation and expiry dates.
What does a designation like 135 P BW FM1 S s10 PA ss nb mean?
The tool builds the designation to EN ISO 9606-1 §5.2, Table 1: 135 is the process (ISO 4063), P plate, BW butt weld, FM1 filler material group, S solid wire, s10 deposited thickness, PA position, ss single-sided, nb no backing. Each part of the designation has its own range in the table.
